This is all spot on. I would also like to add that every time a Republican leader talks about unity, the media should immediately point out that THE most important step they could take in that direction is to LOUDLY denounce the election conspiracy theories and STRONGLY promote the fact that this was a fair and legitimate election and Joe Biden won. Until the Republicans stop de-legitimizing this election there can be no unity.

I've seen a lot made of the way the Rs have phrased their calls for unity in the language of an abusive relationship. "Let it alone or you'll regret it" or "If you do that, they're gonna be mad"

It definitely echoes the kind of threats we've heard from Donald for the last few years - a little bit mob boss, a little bit abusive partner.

But inside all these statements, you can also hear the Rs as the abused.

I'm not excusing a bit of it.

They should have stood up to this a long time ago. They should have held to the morals and principles and character they've been whinging about for decades instead of bowing to a fascist. But they didn't. They accepted the date and stayed with the bad boyfriend because he took them out to fancy restaurants and bought them jewelry.

I can't imagine they don't know how bad he is. I can't conceive of a universe where Kevin McCarthy and these other establishment Rs actually wanted to overthrow the election. Which means they were trusting that the dems would save them from what they were doing. The dems were the safety net for their failings.

They're a fundamental threat to democracy, no question, but I've met enough people in abusive relationships that I can't stop hearing how broken the Republican party is by their five year affair with this man.
