A Vote for Trump is a Vote for More Gun Violence
It got lost in the coverage, but Trump promised the NRA that he would repeal all of Biden's gun safety actions
Over the weekend, Donald Trump spoke at an NRA rally in Texas. Trump tends to let his authoritarian freak flag fly when he speaks to the NRA, and this speech did not disappoint.
The whole thing is worth a watch if you need a reminder of why Donald Trump shouldn’t be allowed within a country mile of the White House. Among other absurdities, Trump floated extending his presidency into a third term:
You know, FDR 16 years — almost 16 years — he was four terms. I don’t know, are we going to be considered three-term? Or two-term?
This quote led the press coverage and fed the cable and online chatter. Per usual, the media — and a lot of Democrats — focused on the shiny object instead of Trump’s more dangerous and politically damaging words.
The NRA speech was a suck-up to the gun industry, a major funder of Republican causes. At one point, Trump promised, “In my second term, we will roll back every Biden attack on the Second Amendment.”
This is a huge deal with deadly consequences. Trump went to the NRA event to accept his flowers from the gun lobbyists, but he ended up giving Democrats a political gift — the only question is: will we take it?
What a Trump Presidency Would Mean
In 2022, President Biden became the first president in over two decades to sign a new gun safety bill. The bipartisan bill expanded the background check process to more gun sellers. Senator Chris Murphy says the law, which he shepherded to passage, contributed to a 20% reduction in urban gun murders.
