Dems Must Confront the MAGA Supreme Court
The ruling in the immunity case raises the stakes in the election. Democrats must respond in kind.
Today, the Supreme Court released its VERY long-awaited decision in the Trump immunity case. And it’s even worse than expected. While Trump does not have the total immunity that his legal team argued for, he does have immunity for official acts, and he has a wide berth to do what he wants. As Justice Sotomayor pointed out in her dissent:
The President of the United States is the most powerful person in the country, and possibly the world. When he uses his official powers in any way, under the majority’s reasoning, he now will be insulated from criminal prosecution. Orders the Navy’s Seal Team 6 to assassinate a political rival? Immune. Organizes a military coup to hold onto power? Immune. Takes a bribe in exchange for a pardon? Immune. Immune, immune, immune.
Today’s opinion represents the nadir for the Supreme Court. A rigged confirmation process and partisan judges with obvious conflicts of interest and sketchy, undisclosed financial entanglements have brought trust in the Court to an all-time low.
This ruling dramatically raises the stakes in this election. If Trump returns to the White House, he will have more unfettered power and fewer checks and balances. Because of this ruling from the MAGA majority, his pledge to be “a dictator on day one” is much more possible.
In both substance and timing, the MAGA Supreme Court put its thumb on the scale for Donald Trump in a dangerously unprecedented manner.
This Timing Was a Choice
By waiting until late June to release an opinion in a case heard in April, it’s clear the Supreme Court under Chief Justice John Roberts’ leadership is trying to rig the election for Trump. The Supreme Court ensured that Trump will face no legal accountability for January 6th before the election. The Supreme Court’s pro-Trump bias is as subtle as Martha Anne Alito’s choice in flags.
