I know this is about DeSantis cratering, but I’d just like to say that Tapper wasn’t exactly as Tapper-like in that interview. It wasn’t a softball interview by any stretch, but it’s always frustrating that Tapper is far tougher on Democratic candidates (and Presidents) than Republicans.
Of course, it’s equally as frustrating to listen to Crooked media folks take swings at their own listeners for criticizing folks like Tapper (and Haberman, etc, etc) - as if we are being wholly unfair about their lack of holding right-wingers accountable for their execrable behavior. It hasn’t happened yet regarding the Tapper interview, but I’m guessing it will. It always does. Which I don’t understand - why do these big time media figures get a pass from too many Crooked Media folks?
Of course, even asking that question will be seen by your co-host as mere carping from the uninformed. It feels a great deal like some Crooked folks see themselves as having been freed from Plato’s cave, while the rest of us simply are still trapped and can’t fully grasp what these journalists are actually doing.
I hope DeSantis is toast. I also hope that someday Crooked will understand why we want journalists and media types to do a better job of not bending over backwards to give Republicans the benefit of the doubt.
I had that sense too. My guess is that the interviewer and the interviewee had some ground rules. You can't force DeSantis to do a CNN interview, he has to believe he's going to gain advantage. That only happens when Tapper doesn't hang him up to dry.
My sense was Tapper wanted let his arguments fall flat on their own merits and let Ron's voice and message be the lack luster brand it is instead of allowing DeSantis to pick a fight with him.
True, and it is. The mainstream media plays to ratings but they still have some journalistic standards. I think PSA and crew don't like adding to the wrong theory that all the Tappers and Maddows of the world as bad as Fox News. Tapper and Maddow are both held to the standard of verifiable facts whereas Fox News is only held to the standard of what they can get away with legally. I'm reading Dan's book "Battling the Big Lie" and he really tears into the media for this exact dynamic you describe where conservatives get a pass often out of the media's overblown fear of "liberal bias".
All this to say, these things are usually more complicated than just "Tapper is going easy on DeSantis and no one cares". So throwing a vaguely justifable accusation of bias into the mix probably does more damage to their professional relationship with CNN and other journalists than it'd be worth.
I was shocked at how much the PSA guys sucked up to Tapper when he was on a few weeks ago. There are legitimate criticisms of CNN and Tapper that they talk about all the time, and then when they get the chance to discuss them with someone from CNN they pretend those criticisms don't exist.
"Well Jake said that Town Halls are always like that so better not prod him on that bullshit answer!"
DeSantis and Trump are both loathsome and vile in their own ways. But they share one distinctive feature of note. Neither ever smiles or laughs, unless it is at the expense of someone else. In most photos they epitomize resting bitch face, which makes them both exceedingly unlikeable. On policy and record neither deserves a single vote, but their scowling contempt elevate their unlikeability to new heights. Vote Blue and make America smile again.
Right. A student of mine once did research on political satire, and his discovery was that folks like DeSantis, Trump and so many conservatives, do not have good political satire because "punching down" isn't funny. Where are the "laughs" in hate and mocking people who are weaker, poorer or just plain different than you? They have no sense of humor. That takes empathy and this is something Trump, DeSantis etc., have never had--especially when you hear the stories of friends of DeSantis. But they do have sarcasm, insults, and contempt for people--especially those least able to defend themselves. In the end, what is there to smile about?
Desantis and Tapper...perfect match. Tapper never pushed back and I cannot stand to listen to Desantis. I live in Florida and he does absolutely nothing for this State. We have the highest rate of inflation due to high homeowners insurance and high rents. He is awful!
I know it is too early to write the obituary, but I wish we could. AND--take a look at the state of Florida. OH--THE state it is in! He is a bad candidate, a bad governor and a pretty bad person, which is showing through his exposure as a national candidate. He is all ambition and hate. What could go wrong? Another flaming idiot out of the annals of "Florida Man." Good riddance...we can hope.
Smart of Tapper, I think, to let the first dance be a happy one. The difference between this Ron, not confronted and neither disputed or presented with “to follow up on that”, is night snd day. You will see, down the road, the petulance, stuttering, and red-faced bluster of the other version.
DeSantis has a two-bit set of advisors and is too suspicious and insular to trust anyone outside his wife and a very few others.
As a Floridian who sees too much of him, I have to say thank heavens he’s a shitty candidate, because I believe he would be more dangerous than Trump as president.
I'm not proud of this, but looking at the change in the June to July polling, it gives me great satisfaction to see that the loathsome Nikki Haley is in the ignominious and shrinking "someone else" band.
Oh boy another message box comment thread where smart people find a new way to describe their contempt for Meatball Ron. 🍿
If Ron has what it takes to put on a public performance that's taken seriously on the national stage for more than 1 event in a row, I haven't seen it. But hey, as long as the alt-right culture warriors are as deeply lame and unlikable as DeSantis, they don't stand a chance in the general.

That makes sense - but it does feel very uneven that folks like Tapper never feel it necessary to have to play such a game with Democrats.

I totally agree.

Keeping on the sunny side of life:
I'm not proud of this, but looking at the change in the June to July polling, it gives me great satisfaction to see that the loathsome Nikki Haley is in the ignominious and shrinking "someone else" band.
Who says all the news is bad?
I agree. Haley is not just empty--she is wrong.
Great post as always. However, I think the ratio is more accurately for every 10 flops there’s a Comeback Kid. Either way he’s toast.

What do you mean Obama lost the first three states? He won Iowa.
His autocracy playbook comes straight from Orban.
Oh, you are so right.
Gillum —thanks again Bernie
Crist -only man to get beat by Scott twice
Sink -sank with no trace
Jim Davis -wait, who?
So DeSantis beats a has-been faded Crist and gets to claim an astonishing victory. Sigh.
Yes---and it created an illusion at precisely a dangerous moment in history
