Perhaps it's time for a Message Box virtual party. Yes, we have hangovers from virtual social hours during COVID, but the closer we get to the election, the more we need each other's company. Or at least a virtual watch party of something. . . If you don't drink, bring a pint of ice cream. Large scoop/shot every time someone says, "compare me to the alternative" or "America first."
“This is a really odd choice for so many reasons, but it tells me one thing—Project 2025 is a very real threat if Trump wins. And Vance will implement it with ruthless efficiency.”
Not an odd choice at all, Dan. Vance has been a major psychophant (misspelling on purpose) for years now. Trump supported his senate run. He will do Trump’s bidding and at 40, is the heir apparent, as vile as that is. Just look at his remarks after Butler, which is why I wasn’t surprised at all.
More surprising, did you really think Project 2025 wasn’t a real threat? But now this makes it real? Come on. This is why you need to stop bashing Biden and help get the Dems united and fired back up. They cannot be allowed to win.
It may soon occur to our elected Dem leaders that we really ought to pull out all the stops on trying to beat these guys. Here’s hoping 50 or so of them walk to the White House and have a heart-to-heart with Biden. Joe winning this election makes the odds of drawing an inside straight pale in comparison.
"Trump picked Vance for the same reasons George W. Bush picked Cheney — someone who has the smarts and know-how to implement the MAGA agenda. "
Cheney, warts and all, was a veteran political insider, having served W's dad as his Secretary of Defense, was the House Majority Whip (like LBJ) back when that meant something, and was even Gerry Ford's Chief of Staff in the White House.
JD Vance is an outsider, who served in the Marines, and his first actual government gig is being the junior Senator from Ohio for all of a year and a half.
I'm not saying he's not smart, but Pence was a more experienced operator than Vance is at present. You probably met Dick Cheney, and JD Vance is no Dick (head) Cheney. He's a completely different kind of dickhead.
I'm not a genius when it comes to this stuff, but does this pick turn off undecideds at all? Hell, two hours ago I was thinking he'd pick Haley to help guide some undecideds into his camp! (btw, this only came to me after she was invited to the convention, I didn't really think that he had a change of heart, nor would his voters for her treasonous ways)
I don’t think he went too deep into the weeds on the undecided voters equation. He already said he doesn’t want Haley voters because, of course, many do not like him. I think for Trump, a great deal is about the telegenic factor and the media savvy of the person. Vance is very adept at handling interviewers who are, admittedly, frustratingly soft and incapable/unwilling to really challenge him. He is camera friendly as well. Rubio is his inferior in both regards. And Burgum always seemed like a very unlikely pick. He comes off like a community theater extra…the town mayor in a Waiting For Gufman stage revival.
Why do people insist that TRUMP picked Vance? Isn't it obvious that J.D. was chosen on Trump's behalf by a collaboration between the Heritage Foundation and the Federalist Society!
I suspect Trump’s one-dimensional mind see’s it this way: when it comes time for Trump to use Vance in some illegal way to stay in power, he won’t have to have his followers hang Vance.
Ironically, even at that point the fact that the country will still have at least the trappings of a representative democracy is good for Trump. In a pure autocracy, Vance would just commit regicide. That’s how power hungry and soulless he is from my perspective.
Don't forget, the most important deciding factor for Trump is loyalty. He believes Vance will be loyal. Why? Because Trump orchestrated Vance's senate win in Ohio.
Dan, I agree that Vance as Trump’s VP would be Manager in Chief of Project 2025. Full stop. Doesn’t he also pull in any wavering younger males who identify as Rs but feel uncomfortable with Trump’s age and indictments? When he ran for OH Senate, Vance presented as a quintessential family man whose spouse is smart, from a more diverse heritage than his, and Vance wrote a bestseller that celebrated his Appalachian heritage. Mountain people haven’t always voted for aristocrats. Vance has a Yale J.D. too.
I found Vance’s autobiography impressive. His persona now strikes me as extraordinarily performative and compared to his voice in his book, unrecognizable. That divergence truly terrifies me. There’s a piece from Vanity Fair published before Vance’s Senate campaign that’s telling as well.
Listened to your pod save post shooting Trump. The part of the pod about Lester Holt was terrible. I found Holt's questions... But her emails on a loop. He asked a question... he should have moved on. The onus was on Holt. People respect him and he took the moment to do a Kristen Welker Chuck Todd kind of interview. I don't agree that he was giving Biden any opportunities. He was trying to catch him in a sound bite. I agree that Biden is not a good speaker. But no one is moving on from a bad debate. MOVE ON!!!!
A debate between Kamala and JD is brewing. Hope Kamala uses her prosecutorial skills to confound him into responding with a word salad devoid of any protein!
Let's face it, Biden has some weaknesses and is showing signs of age. BUT, we need his experience, wisdom, decency now more than ever. Kamala Harris, the Democratic leadership in Congress, and his Cabinet can fill in whatever gaps there are. TOGETHER we can pull this country through the next 4 years and hopefully make a dent in the MAGA movement. I'm for Biden 100%. I see him as the only way for us to survive as America.
It’s time to check the passports and find a place to escape to if democracy fails on November 5th. My adult children are already planning, and I think their parents will follow
And go where? The right wingers are everywhere. In many other countries people have fewer rights than what we presently have here in the US. And fleeing is not a financial option for many of us. Besides, residency is not attainable in a lot of countries unless you have a job waiting for you.
Lots of places. And with telecommuting employment is less of an issue. The right wingers might be everywhere, but Project 2025 is particularly alarming.
Have you ever realistically looked into it? Immigration issues, jobs, banking, the cost of moving overseas? Have you ever even been to a foreign country? Do you understand their politics, culture and whether they like Americans?
At first blush, Vance might appeal to those undecideds who maybe taken with his boyish/youthful look and suburban feel. However, Vance, for all of his grinning, does not really have a sense of humor or easy way about him- especially when the going gets tough. He can be irritatingly smug, just a notch below Vivek on the smug scale. I am hoping that over the next 4 months undecided voters recognize that Vance has a sharp tongue and , as you said, a ruthless lust for power.
Please please please please someones get Biden OUT of the running. He is being so selfish. They got their “July Surprise(s) — now we need ours or LOSE! Read: www.propublica.org/article/inside-ziklag
I am going to the beverage store to pick up some type of alcoholic seltzer. Does anyone else want some?
Already put the box, not bottle, of Chardonnay on my grocery list.

Insert puking face.
No, but you can pick me up an economy sized bottle of bourbon.

What you said times 10. Women get the danger, even many of the ones who've voted for Trump. Some male pundits are having a real hard time with it.
The "Dem Leaders" have been pushing Biden to withdraw from the race. They ddon't want him to win.
Dan. Dan. Dan.

And Vance is already a well known name even to people who don't follow politics.
I'm not surprised that Trump chose him.
Why do people insist that TRUMP picked Vance? Isn't it obvious that J.D. was chosen on Trump's behalf by a collaboration between the Heritage Foundation and the Federalist Society!
LOL.
Trump chose him because he believes he will be loyal. Pence was not loyal.

Ugh. The nightmare gets worse. As always, thanks Dan for your smart and thoughtful perspective.

Yes to all the questions.

He sounds like Ron DeSantis.
Frightening
