I think this needs to be happening with Dems at the state level, too. I am in Oregon, where I feel like the biggest issues are being tackled by the governor, but i visited my cousin in Washington a couple of weeks ago, and she thinks the state has gone to hell. She is a weird hybrid - kind of liberal, kind of conservative, but inclined to vote Dem. That she thinks the state, and by default Gov. Inslee, aren't tackling issues properly is a problem. I'm not sure how much she watches the news, and she lives near Tacoma. In Eastern Washington, the news is very sensationalist and focuses on murders and political fighting. Of course, the mayor of Spokane was recently at an event where she prayed with Matt Shea, a known religious nut job and white supremacist. How does the message of Dem success and progress reach them? There is a lot of noise to cut through.
I have wondered for twenty years (about the time newspapers got economically pressured, then committed suicide by becoming, for the most part, crap) why Democratic incumbents don't run ads constantly. In all the types of media that exist. Short, punchy ads that tout accomplishment. Hire ad firms that will make sure these are pleasing to the eye and ear and as non-objectionable as possible. Make some of them serious but amusing, just to capture attention. A series of ads with each ad limited to a single subject. Either accomplishment or a goal for the next term. If accomplishment, no political talk, just 'this is what this means for you..."
Yeah, I know... expensive. But we need to quit thinking about money, then figuring out what we can then do. We need to figure out what's needed, then get the money. You think Biden couldn't raise a billion and a half for his re-elect? I disagree.
Thanks Dan. We tend to forget how early it really is. The election is just over a year away. Biden needs every minute of that to hone his message and hammer it over and over. I’m glad to see they’re attempting a high variance strategy because a lot of what worked in 2012 doesn’t apply anymore.
I agree with you, Dan... I can’t watch an episode of Suits on Netflix without seeing the Nikki Haley ads-- sure, I know those folks are primary-ing-- I would so rather see GOOD ( not smarmy ) Dem drumbeat of Biden messaging and yes, now is the time to do it. Just a steady build in the voter’s mind... and, no, they aren’t watching CNN. Oh, and I live in New Hampshire..
When I need a plumber, someone to power wash my house, or hem my pants, I refer to paid advertising exactly never. I will sometimes read reviews but more often, I look for referrals and recommendations from friends or other trusted sources. Can you imagine finding childcare or a surgeon by just looking at an ad? Or voting for a president because he paid to be able to tell us what he wants us to hear? Also, I’m a former advertising exec.
Would the Biden campaign be expecting voters to make up their minds through an ad? Or would they just be reminding voters about Biden's accomplishments? His goals for the next term? Show a side of Biden and what he's gotten done that the news media isn't and won't be covering? The ads could persuade and enlighten, but not convince.
I don't mind the ads, say, on Pod Save America. I have learned about a couple of products and services I wasn't aware of. And, admittedly, a few fringe products no one should buy.
