The expectations for Trump are as usual through the floor. It seems like as long as he doesn’t say the N word or pee his pants on stage the media will say he did well. They’ve been so desperate to say he was “presidential” (looking at you, Van Jones) for over 9 years now. I’ve given up on them doing what we’d like them to do, but it’s Harris’ job to not get stuck in the mud with him and play his stupid insult game. If the electorate wants change, point out that he’s a tired act and you’re the new thing.
Did anyonr else pause at this line? "Because I made several questionable decisions in my career, it’s been my job to watch Trump’s rallies, interviews, and speeches for the last nine years." Hoping you don't actually feel like you made career mistakes , Dan, because these so-called bad decisions have meant you've helped a lot of us make it through the Trump years Here's to questionable career decisions!
Yes, I did. I have done same. I have been able to do good things, but looking back one can see so much about choices. Thank the gods for Dan. I just wondered what he wishes he had done. But I would never ask that. That is private.
One of the things about today's politics is how easily we brazenly try to go into each other's heads instead of remaining in our space and listening to their thoughts.
Question for you, Dan. Is there ANY news source you think is doing a good job? I mostly follow NPR and PBS. I cancelled my NYT subscription last year and only subscribe to the WaPost because they give it to me dirt cheap. I try to amplify via social media sources that are good. ProPublica, The Guardian - but they have a rep as being "way left". Any thoughts?
I have often said that the press might not be the enemy of the people but they don’t do us any favors 🙄Sanewashing for sure 👍 I’ve called it Normal Washing for years (I am my own pundit 😜)
Great insights, Dan, as usual. Thank you. One quibble about this: "the fact that 48% of Americans plan to vote for him this fall." No way 48% of Americans plan to vote for Trump. That's someone's polling number for registered or likely voters. That stat is an indictment of many forms of voter suppression and the resulting voter apathy. You know more about this than I do, but the language we use about these statistics may be important to people who are looking for hope.
I am so sorry you have had to endure listening to Trump for nine years. I suspect that would make most people plead for solitary confinement. Hopefully in two months you will never have to listen to him again - and neither will we.
This is exactly what the Morning Joe crew was doing - she has to "slay the bully" according to the increasingly idiotic Donny Deutsch. This is where the PACs and surrogates step up and flood the zone with Trump's inanities.
I think the problem is that people who support Trump have a completely different view of what the President does—which is to say, they don’t seem to think about it as a job that involves any particular degree of executive ability, that it’s just a matter of expression. People who support the Democrats. have more of a concept (though sometimes fuzzy in terms of who has the power to do what) of government actors needing to know things and have strategies for dealing with various issues.
Remember how we were all praying the night before the last debate? Praying for a healthy, vigorous Joe Biden to show up and be a commanding presence? And how shocked and saddened we all felt for the eternity of those next ninety minutes?
MAGA is now reliving all that angst. Here’s hoping they have a worse result than we lived through.
Who will they then turn to? Ron DeSantis? Doug Burghum? Kristi Noem? I know!! Mike Pence.
I'm assuming Dan's title was rhetorical. Of course Trump will benefit from the double standard. He always has and always will. I'll give him credit only on this front: he completely understands that and exploits it to the fullest extent.
I am pretty confident that tomorrow morning we will all be yelling "Hello (insert new outlet here), did you actually WATCH the debate???" A lot of 'sane washing' will be happening tomorrow by the arm chair quarterbacks known as main stream media.
Thank you, Dan.... this is a huge issue that needs more exposure. I've been thinking that whenever a Dem candidate is questioned about a policy, health issue, etc. they need to say something along the lines of, 'I would be glad to answer that -- if you ask Donald Trump the same thing.' Probably no way that could realistically happen though....
Yep—the double standard is real. Frustrating. Sad. Scary. That being said, because I am of the same generation as she is, I have hope that Kamala—who has endured a lifetime of misogynist nonsense like all of us of a certain age—will do what she needs to do.

Dudes... it was a joke. He was making fun of his career.
Maybe.
Love ya, Amy. Glad we're talking again.

Sweet.
Perhaps it was, or wasn’t. What mattered was the idea that we wouldn’t be as informed without him on this career trajectory.
And he learns from us, dear.

The bar for Kamala is very high. The one for her opponent is on the floor.

There was a NYT article this morning all about DJT and his age/faculties. Maybe the MSM is finally covering it?
