SNAP Food Cuts By The Numbers: How many Americans have to starve to pay for the Republican tax cuts for billionaires?
Heartbreaking though it is, I see no upside to conceding to this level of cruelty. Hold the line. In addition to highlighting the cruelty, Democrats should lead food drives and promote ways to help food banks.
Why does the #DirtyOldMan and his enablers not see that this could back fire because the consequences will be so dire? Are they just counting on the Dems to cave in the face of hungry kids bc they actually care about people? Also, little Johnson needs to be mocked every day for his statements that he knows nothing about anything.
My nephew has been in the air force for 14 years. His last paycheck was Oct. 15. I guess he didn't qualify for what the rich friend donated to support only a small percentage of the military. His family also benefits from WIC which they are also going to lose. They are stationed in Texas so can't run over to family members to share meal.
I was not surprised to see a clip of John Thune, standing before a no-doubt empty Senate floor, yelling that the Democrats were refusing to feed starving children by not voting to reopen the government in any of the 13 previous votes.
But I was very agreeably surprised to immediately see a clip of Chuck Schumer, thundering back at the disgraceful Republican attempt to pit children’s hunger against their families’ healthcare.
Very effective moment by Schumer. We all criticise him when he’s not up to the task, so I am glad to acknowledge when he does well. The genuine outrage and shock at this new low by the Republicans absolutely came across.
Great message, ably delivered. If we can stick to this message, this simply delivered, we can be very effective in this shutdown.
My second year of college (50 years ago), I got a (paying!) 3-day gig during registration. My instructions were simple. As students left the area where they pulled a punch card for each of their desired classes, I was to catch their eye, then say, in a conversational tone, “Put your name and student ID number on each punch card, then put the punch cards in one of the gray boxes.” Then I was to wait a beat and say it again in the exact same tone, preceded by the word “Now”. Wait a beat, then say it again, in the same tone, preceded by the word “Remember”.
It worked. I actually later mentioned it in a Poli Sci class on messaging. The professor said it was well designed because catching attention, persistence, brevity, and a positive tone were the keys to communicating messages to harried and distracted people.
I can’t tell you how many times I used some variation of that professionally.
I feel like Dems often have a good message, but they fail to value persistence, especially.
BTW, with thousands of students in three days, I never had anyone ask why I was repeating myself.
Having technical problems this morning, so forgive the disconnect. Thank you so much for writing the facts, Dan. I'm sure everyone knows someone around them that this is touching. Our family is thankful to be able to help but not everyone has that network. I hope that next week's elections will help move the needle with the Republicans - maybe a reality check of things to come.
In a brilliant and compassionate move, the No Kings Alliance announced today a national mutual aid action encouraging groups and individuals to support mutual aid funds and local food banks in their communities. This is a brilliant move, IMHO. A pivot from “just” protesting, to helping improve the lives of those in need, in a national call to action. Lead by example. The decision to not re-open the government and fund programs Trump would like to discard has as much to do with his not appearing strong and caving in, the TACO Trump is no more. He will do ANYTHING to win. He has been cruel, cold and calculating all along. Perhaps his entire motivation is to line his pockets and stay out of jail and it is easiest to accomplish with the Oligarchs in his pocket. He is feeding them as much as they are feeding him.
The Republicans think this will work out for them politically. They think people will blame the Democrats. Sadly they might be right; kicking the crap out of everyday people has always paid off for them politically so far. We'll see if this level of cruelty is a bridge too far, but that can only happen if people know the truth that the Republicans could have kept the programs going and chose not too.
Glad to see the additional posts from you Dan, and the interviews you’ve been doing outside of the normal Crooked Media. These countermand the lies for me, and I’m sure for others. Keep them coming!

I promise this short comment has a point!
