But if Trump is elected in 2024, there will be no 2028 election.

Dream scenario:

1- Huge Dem wins across the board in 2024

2 - Anytime after the election Trump goes to prison and is subsequently photographed without his make up, dyed coif, and girdle, revealing the fat, old, weak man he is (or he fulfills our "actuarial" fantasies)

3 - Haley and DeSantis so damage each other, and factionalize the GOP so badly that it only takes one or two more election cycles to vote the Republican Party into permanent irrelevance. I wish them both luck in this endeavor tonight.

I know, I know... but a girl can dream, right?

It is so cute that they think there is going to be a post Trump Republican Party.

I still can’t figure out why anyone who believes in democracy and respects the rule of law would run for office as a Republican. And if DeSantis is not the nominee, he’ll have two more years as governor to overplay his hand and spend taxpayer money on idiocy. (His latest is asking the FL legislature for a million dollars to sue the CFP for bypassing Florida State University for the College Championship. Great way to spend our money, you chubby incompetent).

And what in the world will Halley do to stay visible and relevant with no platform?

If Trump is the candidate (no prison, no revenge of the transfats), I think these two may well find themselves in the Beto O’Rourke / Stacey Abrams dilemma of ‘out of sight, out of mind’.

Honestly, Trump isn't going to choose any of these yahoos to be his veep. He's going to find another lackey like Mike Pence but with fewer morals. He's running as an out-and-proud fascist now.

I wonder who'd end up the GOP contender if the sky fell before the election.

Dan, I’m sorry your job obligates you to watch the debate.

Anyone else reading people online complaining about POTUS, blabbing about Dean Phillips as a plausible alternative and ignoring the real story of 2024: democracy or none?

There is no way in the foreseeable future that Republicans will seriously get behind a woman or a person of color for President. They only want a white, male, Christian nationalist and one who insults everyone is preferable.

Dan don’t you think it was a mistake for everybody to pile on Ron DeSantis and have a big laugh at how bad he was? He would’ve been far easier to beat than Trump.

“It’s all about 2028” is dead on. Memories are short and the overriding GOP themes are perpetual, however honed by Trump they may forever be. Seems likely, though, that, as you point out, DeSantis and Hailey have shot their wad, disabling them in a future bake-off with Sanders. The question is whether she can manage to avoid being drafted as Trump’s VP, taking instead a soft cabinet or better yet ambassadorial position to secure a 2028 soapbox. Thoughts?
