Dan, I know I speak for all of us here in thanking you especially and your team at Crooked for all of the work, raising money, raising our spirits, helping us know which organizations to trust and much more. You have introduced us to good pols we may not otherwise know, educated us, and it has to have been so much work. Before things get better or worse, time to say thank you from our whole, collective hearts. You are one good man.

People who think Trump was better on the economy have little to no idea about how "the economy" works or what factors influence it. There's no way they're going to get up to speed in a week. Too bad the old anti-Nixon slogan hasn't made a comeback: "Would you buy a used car from this man?" ("Casino" could have been substituted for "car.")

Agreed - and I was trying to think how you could point this out quickly and with receipts. But I'm not an economist, and while I love that President Obama pointed out some facts, I'm not sure I can land that when I'm talking to my undecided people.

Just in general, facts alone don't do it. I think that's why bringing up the Dobbs decision and what's happened in many red states since is so effective: it's not hard to imagine yourself or someone you care about in the position of those women who couldn't get the care they needed.

In 2016 Trump was lucky enough to inherit a rising and strong economy and he (and all of us) rode that wave. Just like he inherited his $$ from his father. When things got tough, he had no idea what to do, and tanked us all, that is the economy Biden inherited from Trump. Historically high unemployment and inflation. The current economy is going to be much more challenging and Trump's only idea is tariffs which will raise prices for all of us.

To me the simplest way to put this (though probably still too complicated for most) is that going back to how things were in Trump’s first term is simply not an option, with or without Trump. That was all before the pandemic, the pandemic scrambled everything, all over the world. We can’t make the pandemic un-happen. Of course reminding people of the pandemic is less than optimal, it reminds the working class of that time when white-collar folks got to stay home safe and sound while they had to brave disease and a crime wave to do the jobs that can’t be done at a safe remove.

I think that “Kamala Harris for the People” is just so powerful (because The Donald is demonstrably only for himself). When tied to a list of “who’s gonna do what about” 1. Life; 2. Liberty; and, 3. The Pursuit of Happiness—It is THE closing argument worth making. “It’s your survival, silly.”

Meanwhile, Trump is running a couple ads on baseball that are like conservative Mad Libs, but ends with Kamala is for "They/Them, Donald Trump is for Us."

Thank you, Dan. Invaluable stuff for all of our personal communications and our volunteer activities.

Trump’s closing message was a Nazi rally redux (at which he wore Proud Boy colors) at Madison Square Garden. Hate-filled messaging that even some other Republican candidates are criticizing.

Meanwhile Harris’s closing argument is a mix of pointing out what an asshole he is, while drawing a contrast with her own very positive message on her plans. The perfect way to close.

I read that the Harris campaign is knocking on 1.25 million doors daily in just the battleground states. Plus similar activities in other states, phone and text banking. Postcard time is about over. We sent out our final two hundred yesterday—all directed at GA.

No more polls! I am optimistic and plan to remain that way through Election Day.

I wish I knew how to create a graphic that shows how Republicans have inherited and blown Democratic economic successes. This was true with Bush 2, and again with Trump. That might help dispel the myth that Trump was responsible for a better economy.

I have made this list (not a graphic) in the past. It's impressive. Over the last 60 years, Republicans have gradually managed to get the following things wrong: the environment, race, gender, economy, human rights, civil liberties, poverty, sexuality, international relations, globalization, and--finally--the core values and public goods of the national project to "form a more perfect union" initiated over 235 years ago. If you make a graphic I will use it in a power point someday!!!

I wish the campaign included future SCOTUS nominations as part of their message. Does this mean that their polling tells them voters don't care? As best I can tell, they've been silent on this.

Nothing is more frightening than a future SCOTUS stuffed with more Trump/Project 2025 appointees.

I am guessing the data shows that those are already her voters, for those to whom that’s a decisive issue.

Susan Hofstader's avatar

Democrats have been campaigning on the importance of SCOTUS for decades and it’s never had an impact, I imagine a lot of people now think it’s too late because the right wing crazies are already in control. There are much more immediate things to fear with Trump, like basically trashing the Constitution and the economy altogether and trying to turn the US into a personal dictatorship like his buddy Vlad has.

I loved Kamala Harris' "to do" list--from the get go. I am still feeling good about the dynamcs here. Trump has a plateau of 47%. Turn out and growth above 48 % --to 50% and better--are all within Harris' potential. The late break, I think, will go to Harris and Walz--and Trump is helping with his vulgar, Fascist, promise to ruin our country and our futures. Sure--I want to be even more confident, but that would be foolhardy. The election is truly still tied. All the same--the closing argument is right. The tone is good. Dan--your help here is immensely important, because a clear view of how this can go is about hope. Not optimism. Hope! All my life and experience with Kamala Harris tells me that she will not disappoint us. Get in behind her and hang on. Kamala Harris is a closer.

When that Clinton ad came out, my oldest kid was just starting a civil service career as an election official. I was a good and happy thing. Now she has advanced well beyond her age in that careers, she is very good at it, but she is now also looking to leave elections work; in that eight years it went from a job to be proud of that nobody even knew anyone was doing, to a job in which you would receive threats of rape and death every day, and were protected by multiple walls of security that never had to be there before.

When that Clinton ad came out, my youngest kit was a smart happy go lucky little boy. Now he is a young near-adult in transition, and thus under threat of the worst imaginable life because we may be about to throw away not only our democracy, but also, our relatively civil society in which one can find reason and kindness, and being a good person is not illegal.

Our children were watching.

American ex-pat living in Europe here, thanking you and your colleagues at Crooked Media for the virtual tons of information you have provided over the last months. My knowledge of German history compels me to ask you for a quick "compare the two" list of Hitler and the Orange Guy. The parallels are so obvious and so frightening to us here. Maybe it would help some "undecided voter" (what the f... is THAT?) make up their mind. You are right, I fear, that fascism doesn't mean much as a concept to most Americans, but I think the name Hitler rings a bell...

I hadn't seen the Harris To-Do List before now. That's a brilliant piece of advertising: simple but substantial. People don't want to read a policy paper, but we have all made to-do lists and therefore have a natural desire to see what's on someone else's. I hope the campaign is doing everything it can to get that out to the public.

The Hillary commercial was a devastating closing argument, but Hillary never got a policy idea forward that anyone could rally around.

The Opportunity Economy and the Checklist are actual policy ideas that beat Build the Wall or They're Eating Pets, or whatever it is Trump is selling. You're right. You have to do both. Illustrate why the Orange Man is bad AND give people some hope for a better tomorrow.

Need some hope? James Carville has good political instincts and I trust them. Read his op-ed:

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/23/opinion/kamala-harris-win-election.html

To his point, now is the time for courage and conviction, not doubt and second-guessing. Do you really believe these low-N-value public polls, or the clickbait pieces where Trump wins the popular vote? Give me a break. Even David Plouffe ignores public polls; they are trash.
