Desensitization, making us feel we can’t do anything is part of the plan to more us away from democracy. “Systemic gun violence is part of a Republican political design to destabilize American society.” This piece from Ruth Ben-Ghait, professor of authoritarianism, says more - https://lucid.substack.com/p/mass-shootingslucid-q-and-a-may-27?r=bi4n&s=r&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

Thanks Dan for the realistic but still somehow hopeful take on the very grim reality of gun violence in America. I definitely agree that progressive activists and politicians need to try new things. Our current political system and media environment is broken and trying to work strictly within the traditional confines of those is doomed to failure. Some things will work and others won't, but we won't know until people try.

Well said, Dan. I know we have firey Dems that can get these viral moments that get clicks. I know that may seem shallow, but I think that's what it takes to break through the media bubble.

Thank you, Dan. There is so little to do on an individual basis, and I am so angry and sad that on the anniversary of the horror that was George Floyd’s lynching, we are here again. As small as it seems, it’s useful to have permission to feel useless… for a second & then to pick myself back up. Take care.

I was glad to see Beto confront Abbott et al. Sure seems to me he is genuinely pissed like all of us are who have the ability to experience empathy. I'm hoarse from screaming at the TV every time a Repub says "now is not the time". When will it be the time for them? When one of their loved ones dies a horrific death. I see pictures of the beautiful individuals posted who became victims and I think perhaps before and after pictures should be posted. To think that some of the victims were so disfigured they had to be identified by DNA makes me ill. Perhaps if the politicians and all those in the public domain who constantly cry about their 2nd amendment rights to bear arms are confronted with the grisly photos of every victim of a senseless slaughter just maybe something would be done to stop the sale of assault weapons and gun laws would be enacted that would protect all of us.

Thank you, Dan, for expressing the emotions we are all feeling. All the news is so terribly overwhelming you can drop into total despair. I've always felt concentrating on one issue is the most impactful, but we are daily bombarded with multiple horrific issues that need to be fixed resulting in a feeling of hopelessness. Congress is so dysfunctional, you can see the populist appeal of a dictator that shares your belief structure. That is the danger we are all facing. I think Dems need to up their game on expressing righteous anger regularly. Any thoughts on how do that effectively? I am planning to work to get Cheri Beasley in the the Senate this fall.

I had this EXACT conversation with some friends last night, as I expect many of us did. I wish I had Dan's clarity and eloquence at the time.

Any politician not forcefully demanding an end to the filibuster and to expand the court is not serious about solving the problem. They just aren’t.

Dan, I appreciate your clarity at a time when I'm just f*%king angry, again. I'm exhausted by the vile filth Republicans have been spewing - it has real life consequences, and now I feel like THAT needs to be the message. I really think we are going to have to use the dead in political messaging to hammer home the devastating effect that Republican "policies" have had and will continue to have, including Roe. I wonder how many people have died from Democratic policies in comparison?

Thanks for channeling my feelings. Situation of easy civilian access to AR-15s is deplorable. Show Senators photos of the damage these weapons cause to humans (including children in Uvalde). Need to get the Assault Weapons Ban passed again (thank you Dianne Feinstein) with more Democrats elected.
