I certainly agree with what you've written. I will, however, take issue (a minor issue) with the NYT writers who you quoted stating that Trump "presented a counterproposal to Vice President Kamala Harris". Trump didn't issue a counterproposal, Trump issued a demand, an order. He wasn't negotiating, because he would never be seen as negotiating with anyone, but particularly a woman. I would also add that Trump, or at least his campaign, remember his debates with Hillary Clinton. Trump lost those debates and showed his hatred, misogyny and lack of command on the issues as Hillary stayed calm and spoke with authority and knowledge. He even tried to stalk her around the debate stage at one of the debates. Trump cannot deal with any woman who stands up to him.

It seems the NYT can't help being the NYT. Sad.

Moreover he is insisting that it be on “his campaign network Fox and his Trump’s Friends” and before a live audience of tens of thousands of screaming idiots who love him as a bully! Never happen!!

Right.

Harris should absolutely not agree to the Fox "debate" and she absolutely should call out the Trump campaign for being too afraid to debate on the prior terms. It might also be nice to note along the way that there hasn't been a real "debate" - as in, a discussion of different policy positions among the candidates - since Obama/Romney. Ds should stop engaging in these joint media appearances until the R's get real candidates who plan to govern rather than strip our country for parts.

And isn't Kamala planning to show up on the original date, with or without TFG? A town hall would be great! Bring in an audience! As the planned debate wasn't going to have one - make it a special audience of, say, middle school or high school students. Enough with the blather of talking heads - be creative and have some fun!

I love this idea - youth are critical to this election.

Kamala Harris is poetic justice for the republicans because she will prosecute trump and bring full justice to our country. God had a hand in shifting trumps bullet a few inches. God wants trump to live long enough to get his ass kicked by a black woman.

You've got that right. But this plus the Trump of the 9 years you've been watching him begs the question: Why is it that such a vile, despicable incompetent human being as Donald Trump has gotten and seem to continue to get breaks, passes and thumbs on the scale in his favor from the media and so many Americans who should know better? To say nothing of the 74 million that voted for him the last time.

Follow the money. It's everywhere behind him.

I get why so many overwhelming white USians want to believe this guy, but the so-called mainstream media is a whole other subject. Corporate $$$ has something to do with that too, but it sure doesn't explain everything.

I asked the same basic question- why does the media continue to give a pass to Trump (conversely, they hunted Biden down)? I’d like to get Dan’s thoughts on this.

To go straight to the point: Kamala’s campaign uses We Won’t Go Back! as the answer to Make American Great Again.

Brilliant!

Nothing beats that side by side comparison to convey that Trump's weakness. But in addition to that, one of the many things that has turned the anti-MAGA coalition campaign from a death march to a thrilling joyous work party is the new way that coalition is framing the choice. Kamala, her campaign, her VP candidates, even our local Dems' booth at the county fair is doing what Dems have failed to do for so long: Put forward our values and our vision, while marginalizing the MAGA agenda. We are finally saying clearly, without equivocation or apology, and with forward-thinking optimism the things we are for. And every Trump slur and insult, every MAGA hate bomb gives us an opportunity to draw that contrast on our terms, not theirs. We are doing what Anat Shenker-Osorio has been advising for years: we're saying what we're for, and we're throwing a better party.

Let’s get real— he doesn’t “debate”! He doesn’t answer the questions posed by the moderator and instead rants nonstop lies!

Infuriating that the media writ large relentlessly obsessed over every Biden word stumble but continues to give a pass to Trump. Thank you Dan for underscoring what many of us already know; Trump has lost more than a step. Do you think the wider media might grow a few and start reporting on this with regularity and if not, why?

“can’t speak off the cuff” - says the guy who when speaking off the cuff, insults basically everyone and rambles on through completely incoherent sentences.

If “the former president seems scared, weak, and old compared to Harris” (and that is true and clear to even us casual observers), should Harris seek that side-by-side visual even if she has to do so on Fox? Or is the risk of very clever gotcha questions too much?

The words I would use to describe Harris are smart, forceful and focused. Much as I liked Hillary, she had the assurance of the smartest and most prepared kid in the class, not the intensity and focus of a prosecutor. While Hillary held her own with Trump, Harris would shred him.

While I agree that Harris would prevail through even a thicket of gotcha questions, and benefit from the side-by-side visual, the Trump bullying and interruptions, combined with a roaring pro-Trump partisan crowd would be problematic.

Simply insist on no audience.

The Harris campaign's meme game is strong. Now if we can just get past the advocates sniping at each other over VP picks. It's kind of like the build up to Joe dropping out where people were yelling at any kind of thoughtful discussion of candidate merits, which are clearly important to assess. I'll be glad when she announces and gets that bump. August will be good if the convention goes well.

I so totally want to see that side-by-side if for no other reason than I want to see that asshole look completely defeated and small and inconsequential. She doesn't even have to say a word, and she will make him look foolish and irrelevant, and that's kind of awesome. I am so ready to put the past where it needs to be: behind us and consigned to history.

There’s a lot of intangible things that happen in a so-called debate. She is much physically smaller than him. that will matter in an unconscious way as people consider whether she could be the commander-in-chief. He will bring up gratuitous and gross comments about the past sexual history of her and her husband, it gives him a lot of airtime. It makes a spectacle. I think she’s doing great and should not stop her momentum and should not try to be on the same stage with a criminal.

Those 74 million people are likely stuck in the Fox lies bubble. Years ago there was no Fox news that spewed lies that could easily be disproven.
