Nice column, Dan. Very useful. I just want to point out that I have been ramping up my GOTV canvassing and all the arguments that you propose for friends and relatives have become my GO TO sources for the conversations that come up when I knock doors, or (miraculously) get someone on the phone. I share them regularly with my fellow canvassers. It helps build up my courage (I am an utter coward) to knock on a stranger's door or to talk to them on the phone to know that I am prepared with crisp arguments. And I can also deliver the message more calmly, with appropriate friendly listening and questions, because I have the confidence in knowing I have strong clear arguments to share. You provide a great service for which I am very grateful.

For a barometer about how informed people are, my brother does keep up with the news and is usually pretty up on what's going on (although he's not very online—we should all be so lucky) but had no idea what the NY trial is about until we talked a few days ago. (His main news sources are local/national TV news, but he lives in a deep red state, and he thinks the local news does not report on stories that make Trump look bad.)

Great points. Always in it for himself. Also, you were totally right about the “cocaine” issue. Every well-informed person I quizzed had not heard about that lie.

You write "The hush money payments were made eight years ago and involved an extramarital affair." Weren't the payments actually a case of Donald Trump covering up buying sex ("buying" either for immediate cash or because the woman saw future advantage in doing him). I see no reason we shouldn't say so. Makes him, accurately, look pathetic -- an old man who needs to pay to get off.

His willingness to pay hush money speaks to a pattern of behavior in which he feels he can do anything he wants. Key to this one is the immunity he claims to have as president doesn't apply because it preceded his term. I read a take on Twitter today that by delaying ruling on Trump's immunity, the Supremes are saying yes in practice if not in ruling. That is aggravating.

What we’re not talking about is*why* these “uncles” are so eager to go maga. We could start talking about volunteering, about which charities are doing good work near us, about local events for health, or just make jokes.
